NJ to formally repeal the death penalty Monday

Press accounts note Gov. Jon Corzine is scheduled to sign the bill abolishing the death penalty in New Jersey at the Statehouse in Trenton on Monday.

As one insider noted, NJ’s public defender system leaves a “perfect record” of no executions in the modern era despite innumerable capital prosecutions. Thanks to their efforts well less than 1% of all homicides in the time period (.6%) resulted in a death sentence. The 8 men currently on death row were responsible for less than 1/10th of 1% of all homicides in the twenty-five year history of NJ’s death penalty which now appears to have just hours left.
