Texas kills
[Update: I just got this image from an execution or two back in Texas of Greg Wright, it was too moving not to share]
The comment to the picture from Bente Hjortshøj notes:
The first time we touched you Greg…you were still warm…you looked at peace…as though you were just sleeping and would wake up soon….it was sooooo hard to see you like this though you were finally free..this is just about 15 minutes after the execution…sooo surreal….BUT dearest Greg…..Me and Connie kept our promise to you and for that we are glad…but it was tougher than we thought…. we did it out of love and respect for you!! [thanks to Bente Hjortshøj @ Facebook for letting this picture be used]

Texas tonight killed Gregory Wright. DNA seemingly indicates that Mr. Wright’s co-defendant, and not he, was responsible for the murder at bar.
Proclaiming his innocence, condemned prisoner Gregory Wright was executed Thursday evening for the fatal stabbing and robbery of a Dallas-area woman who tried to help him when he was homeless. “There’s been a lot of confusion who done this,” Wright said from the death chamber gurney. Then, as he has for years, he declared a fellow homeless man, John Adams, was responsible for the murder of Donna Vick. “I never sold anything to anyone. My only act or involvement was not telling on him. John Adams was the one that killed Donna Vick. The evidence proves that. … I was in the bathroom when he attacked. I ran into the bedroom. By the time I came in, when I tried to help her with first aid it was too late.” He said an innocent man was being put to death and said he loved his family. “I’ll be waiting on y’all. I am finished talking.” Nine minutes after the lethal drugs began to flow, he was pronounced dead at 6:20 p.m. CDT.

If you execute enough people, after a while it becomes routine and individual case details blend into an ugly mass. If you execute 455 people and 400 are guilty, that’s 80% or so- the other 55 just get swept up because after the first 400 you just no longer care. That is the only way to have the death penalty- kill everyone you can find without distinctions about their guilt, innocence, constitutional rights, degrees of culpability or anything else. This is not about Wright but about the overall application of the dp.

The reason I posted this pic had less to do with Mr. Wright than it does with the people around him. This was a very loving, very human picture. If you did not know he had just been killed by the State of Texas you might think he had died in a hospital surrounded by friends. This picture, I think, captures the other set of friends & family, those of the condemned. I’ve seen many photos of those saying good-byes before death, but this is the only picture I know of people saying good-bye after an execution.

It is a shame Ms Vick could not have had a last meal , a few phone calls to her loved ones , a priest present , some family and friends there for her ,and a peaceful death like Mr Wright had.
